Long-Tail Keyword

Last updated: March 2025

Definition

A specific, multi-word search phrase with lower volume but higher intent. 'Best cold email subject lines for SaaS' instead of 'cold email.' Easier to rank for because fewer sites target them. The traffic is smaller but converts better because the searcher knows exactly what they want.

Why It Matters

Most sites chase head terms and ignore long-tail. That's backwards. Long-tail keywords collectively drive the majority of search traffic, and the conversion rates are 2-5x higher. A new site should build its entire SEO strategy around long-tail first.

How to Improve

  • Use Google autocomplete and People Also Ask to find long-tail variations of your main keywords.
  • Create dedicated content for long-tail phrases instead of trying to rank one page for everything.
  • Include the exact long-tail phrase in your H1 or H2. Specificity signals relevance to Google.
  • Build FAQ sections targeting long-tail questions. Each Q&A pair is a mini ranking opportunity.
