Title Tag
Last updated: March 2025
Definition
The HTML title element that shows up as your clickable headline in Google search results and browser tabs. 50-60 characters. It's the single most important on-page SEO element because it directly influences both rankings and click-through rates. Get this wrong and nothing else matters.
Why It Matters
Title tags are the first thing both Google and searchers see. A keyword-rich, compelling title tag improves rankings and CTR simultaneously. Rewriting title tags on existing pages is often the fastest, lowest-effort SEO win you can make.
How to Improve
- Front-load your primary keyword. 'Cold Email Templates That Convert' beats 'How to Write Emails That Work for Cold Outreach.'
- Keep it under 60 characters so it doesn't get truncated in search results.
- Make each title tag unique across your site. Duplicate titles confuse Google about which page to rank.
- Add a compelling modifier: a number, year, or outcome. '7 Cold Email Templates (2026)' outperforms generic titles.
