Structured Data for AI

Last updated: March 2025

Definition

Schema markup and semantic HTML optimized specifically for AI consumption. Beyond traditional SEO schema, this includes explicit entity definitions, relationship markup, and machine-readable claims that help AI systems understand your content without interpretation. Think of it as making your page self-documenting for machines.

Why It Matters

AI systems increasingly rely on structured data to understand page content accurately. Pages with strong structured data get cited more frequently and more accurately in AI responses. It's the difference between an AI system guessing what your page means and knowing exactly what it says.

How to Improve

  • Add Organization, Product, and FAQ schema to relevant pages. These are the highest-value schema types for AI visibility.
  • Use DefinedTerm schema for glossary and knowledge content. It explicitly tells AI systems 'this is a definition.'
  • Mark up authors with Person schema including credentials and expertise areas. E-E-A-T signals matter for AI citation.
  • Validate all structured data with Google's Rich Results Test. Broken schema is worse than no schema.
