Editorial Calendar
Last updated: March 2025
Definition
A strategic planning tool that maps content themes, narratives, and campaigns across weeks or months. Unlike a content calendar (which tracks individual pieces), the editorial calendar defines what topics you'll emphasize during each period and why. It connects content production to business goals and seasonal opportunities.
Why It Matters
A content calendar without editorial direction produces random content. The editorial calendar ensures every piece supports a bigger narrative, whether that's a product launch, a seasonal push, or a thought leadership campaign. It's the difference between publishing content and executing a content strategy.
How to Improve
- Align editorial themes with business quarters. What does the company need to communicate each quarter?
- Map themes to buyer journey stages. Q1 might focus on awareness content; Q2 might focus on conversion content.
- Leave 20% of capacity unplanned for reactive opportunities: trending topics, competitor moves, customer stories.
- Review editorial performance quarterly. Drop themes that don't drive results. Double down on what works.
