Content Pillar
Last updated: March 2025
Definition
A comprehensive, authoritative page covering a broad topic that serves as the hub for a cluster of related content. Your pillar page links to supporting articles, and they link back. It's an architecture decision, not a content format. The pillar establishes topical authority; the cluster pages capture long-tail search traffic.
Why It Matters
Random blog posts compete with each other and dilute your authority. A pillar-cluster structure concentrates ranking power and shows Google you cover the entire topic deeply. Sites with strong pillar architecture rank faster for competitive keywords than sites publishing disconnected articles.
How to Improve
- Pick three to five core topics your business should own. Build one pillar page per topic.
- Write the pillar page as a comprehensive overview (2,000-4,000 words) that links to deeper supporting articles.
- Every supporting article should link back to the pillar page. This distributes authority both ways.
- Update pillar pages quarterly with new data, examples, and links to recent supporting content.
