Backlink
Definition
When another website links to yours. It's a vote of confidence—or at least a reference. Google weights link quality heavily. A link from TechCrunch matters more than 100 links from spammy directories.
Why It Matters
Backlinks are still a primary ranking factor. Domain with strong links ranks better than newer domains in most competitive categories. They also bring referral traffic and credibility from association.
How to Improve
- Create something original worth citing—research, a tool, or a framework. Link bait works.
- Find articles in your space mentioning competitors. Pitch the author with your better resource.
- Partner with complementary companies on content. Co-authored pieces get shared more and earn more links.
- Use tools to find where your brand was mentioned without a link. Reach out and ask for one.
