Featured Snippet

Last updated: March 2025

Definition

The answer box at the top of Google search results, pulled directly from a page. It shows a paragraph, list, or table that answers the query without clicking. Position zero. You earn it by structuring your answer in a format Google can extract cleanly.

Why It Matters

Featured snippets get 8-12% of all clicks on the SERP and steal traffic from position one. They also feed AI Overviews and voice search answers. If you're already ranking in the top ten, snippet optimization is one of the fastest traffic wins available.

How to Improve

  • Find queries where you rank positions 2-10 that have a featured snippet. These are your best snippet opportunities.
  • Answer the question directly in 40-60 words right below the relevant heading. No preamble.
  • Use the question as your H2 or H3. Google matches heading questions to snippet answers.
  • For list snippets, use numbered or bulleted lists with clear, concise items. Google prefers structured formats.
