Power Words
Last updated: March 2025
Definition
Words that trigger an emotional or psychological response. 'Free,' 'instant,' 'proven,' 'exclusive,' 'guaranteed.' They work because they shortcut the rational brain and tap into desire, fear, curiosity, or urgency. Used well, they sharpen copy. Overused, they feel manipulative and cheap.
Why It Matters
Bland copy gets skimmed. Swapping one generic word for a power word can lift CTR, open rates, and scroll depth without changing your argument. They're highest-leverage in headlines, CTAs, and subject lines where every word competes for attention.
How to Improve
- Keep a swipe file of 20-30 power words that fit your brand voice. Not every power word works for every brand.
- Use one or two per headline maximum. Stacking them feels like a late-night infomercial.
- Match the power word to the emotion you want. 'Proven' builds trust. 'Instant' creates urgency. Don't mix signals.
- Test power word variants in email subject lines where you can measure open rate impact directly.
