Gated Content

Last updated: March 2025

Definition

Content that requires an email address or form submission to access. Ebooks, reports, templates, webinar recordings, and tools behind a signup wall. The trade is clear: you give value, they give contact info. Works best when the gated content is genuinely more valuable than what you publish freely.

Why It Matters

Gated content is still one of the most effective lead generation mechanisms when done right. The key is that the gate must feel like a fair trade. If the content behind the gate isn't significantly better than your free content, people feel tricked and distrust your brand.

How to Improve

  • Gate only your highest-value content. Reports with original data, comprehensive templates, and interactive tools justify the gate.
  • Keep the form short. Name and email is enough for a top-of-funnel offer. Longer forms belong on bottom-of-funnel content.
  • Show a preview or table of contents before the gate. Let people see what they're trading their email for.
  • Follow up within 24 hours with a nurture sequence. Leads go cold fast. The email should deliver more value, not a sales pitch.
